Located in the Caribbean Sea, St. Kitts is a member of the Leeward Islands in the West Indies. St. Kitts is located roughly two miles northwest of its sister island Nevis and 2000 miles southeast from Puerto Rico. The channel separating the two islands has a prestige for it uneven waters and some of the most splendid coral reefs in the area. While many tourists in the area come for the snorkeling and other water sports, up on the hillside, away from the all inclusive resort vacation lies historic Brimstone Hill.

While a stay at an all inclusive Brazil resort might lead the history lover to check out Brazil's unique and colorful architecture. A visit to St. Kitts wouldn't be perfect without a trip to Brimstone Hill. Aptly named for the intense smell of sulfur emanating from nautical vents in a close presence to the island, Brimstone is what emerged after limestone at the bottom of the ocean ruptured. The hill itself is a solid mass of volcanic rock covered by limestone.

In 1690, long before hotels all inclusive lined the beaches of the Caribbean, construction of the Brimstone Hill Fortress began to take place. It was originally built to offer a view of approaching ships and protect the commercial area know as Sandy Point and Fort Charles on the coast just below. An added function of the fortress was to offer security and protection to officials and other island inhabitants while wartime.

Over the years, the fortress changed hands many times. One power shift of note came shortly after the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The ensuing years lead to a essential expansion and refurbishment of the Brimstone Hill Fortress with the fortress becoming more or less its very own victorious small town atop the hillside. Unfortunately by the middle of the 19th century, the Brimstone Hill area was abandoned as the United Kingdom focused its efforts on other territories.

Brimstone Hill has suffered varied tragedies and set backs over the years. With the making ready of the Brimstone Hill recovery community in 1965, a window into the past was opened once again. It was a daunting task, but the community restored buildings, stabilized ruins, and waged an all important group awareness campaign about the historical gem sitting in ruins on the hillside. Today tourists from all over the globe visit Brimstone Hill to learn about the rich history of the island and peruse an exceptional architectural feat.
